Several weeks ago, I got to visit the city that all ad people dream of visiting – New York City! My mom, sister and I hit up all the first time must dos – getting lost in the bee’s hive of Times Square, reaching the summit of the man-made Empire State Building, experiencing Dali up close, and reliving September 11 at ground zero. What I noticed was advertising was all around me. When the necessary duty of souvenir shopping had to be accomplished, the treasure for which I searched kept being seen everywhere. The one familiar icon that comes second only to the smiley face continued to make it’s appearance, “I [heart] NY”. It is on everything from baby bibs to shot glasses.
Seeing Milton Glaser’s logo everywhere got me to thinking about how over complicated we tend to make things. Glaser kept it simple in his message and design when he created the I [heart NY] logo over 30 years ago and as a young designer I think that is important to keep in mind. Try not to complicate things or over think them but keep the design simple and clean. We need to remind ourselves not to overlook the effectiveness of simplicity when designing. And now that I am home I am proudly drinking my morning coffee out of my very own I [heart] NY mug and coming up with my next big design idea!
